The Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT are purpose-built off-road platforms — but even from the factory, there’s significant room to improve. Whether you’re adding clearance for bigger tires, upgrading the ride quality, or prepping for serious trail work, this guide covers everything you need to know.
Step 1: Define Your Build Goals
Before you spend a dollar, get clear on what you want:
- Daily driver + mild trails — 2–3.5" lift, moderate tires (35s), quality shocks
- Weekend warrior — 3.5–4.5" lift, 35–37" tires, upgraded control arms
- Serious off-road / overlanding — 4.5"+ lift, 37–40" tires, long-arm kit, bypass shocks
Your tire size largely determines your lift requirement. On a JL, 37s fit with as little as 2.5" of lift. 40s typically need 4.5" or more and may require a long-arm conversion.
Leveling Kits vs. Full Lift Kits
A leveling kit (1.5"–2.5") corrects the factory rake and allows slightly larger tires with minimal geometry change. These are ideal if you want a clean look and better daily drivability without going full suspension.
A full lift kit replaces the factory coil springs, control arms, and often shocks. Brands like Carli Suspension, BDS Suspension, and Synergy Manufacturing offer complete bolt-on kits designed for the JL/JT that maintain factory geometry while dramatically improving capability.
The Case for Long-Arm Suspension
At lifts above 4", a long-arm suspension conversion becomes the preferred choice for serious builds. Longer control arms improve articulation, reduce bind, and allow larger lifts without the harsh geometry penalties of stock arm kits. Synergy Manufacturing’s JL long-arm system is one of the most respected options on the market — fully bolt-on, no cutting required.
Shocks: Where Most Builders Skimp
Your shocks are doing most of the work. Cheap shocks paired with expensive springs are a waste of money. For Jeep builds, consider:
- FOX 2.0 Performance Series — excellent value for daily drivers and moderate trails
- FOX 2.5 Performance Elite — remote reservoir for better heat management, ideal for heavier use
- Carli Suspension shocks — built specifically for Carli’s lift systems, outstanding on-road comfort with serious off-road capability
Don’t Forget the Supporting Mods
Once you add lift and bigger tires, you’ll need to address:
- Steering stabilizer — improves trail steering. FOX ATS is a favourite.
- Adjustable track bars — corrects axle centering after lift; Carli and Synergy both offer excellent options for JL/JT
- Brake line extensions — required on most lifts above 2.5" to prevent tearing
- Alignment — always do a full alignment after any suspension change
- Differential re-gears — if running 37s or larger, plan on re-gearing to 4.56 or 4.88 to recover power and fuel economy
