All about 2017-2022 Super Duty Death Wobble Fix Parts

If the front of your 2017-2022 F-250 or F-350 4x4 starts shaking hard after a bump or an expansion joint, and the steering wheel will not settle until you slow way down, that is death wobble. The solid front axle is held side to side by the track bar. Any slack there, or in the tie rod, drag link or ball joints, lets the axle start to oscillate. If the truck is still under warranty, ask a Ford dealer to check your VIN for open recalls or service programs first. This page holds the parts that remove the slack, from Kryptonite, ICON, BDS, Carli, Cognito and RPM Steering.

Start here

Start at the track bar. With the truck on the ground and the engine running, have a helper rock the steering wheel while you watch both ends of the track bar and its bolts. If the bar moves before the axle does, it has play. Track bar ball joint, bushing and rebuild kits fix a worn end without replacing the whole bar.

How to choose

Adjustable or fixed bar

Leveling or lifting shifts the axle off centre. An adjustable track bar puts it back. On a stock-height truck a heavy-duty fixed-length bar does the job.

Steering linkage

Worn tie rod and drag link ends feed the wobble. Upgraded linkage, such as Kryptonite Death Grip or the RPM Steering system, uses thicker links (2 inch and larger) built to resist bending with big tires.

Ball joints

Worn upper or lower ball joints let the knuckle move. Replace them in pairs.

Lifted trucks

A track bar drop or relocation bracket keeps the track bar and drag link close to parallel, which reduces bump steer.

Stabilizer last

Single and dual steering stabilizers damp the steering. They do not fix a loose part. Fix the slack first.

Common questions

Will a dual steering stabilizer cure death wobble?

No. It can hide the shake for a while, but the loose part keeps wearing. Find the joint with play and replace it, then choose a stabilizer.

Do I need an adjustable track bar on a stock truck?

Not always. If the bar ends are tight and the axle is centred, a factory or heavy-duty fixed bar works. Leveled or lifted trucks need an adjustable bar to re-centre the axle.

Can tires cause death wobble?

An out-of-balance or out-of-round tire can start it, but a tight front end usually settles it. If it keeps coming back, look for play in the steering and track bar.

Do I need an alignment after replacing these parts?

Yes. Track bar, tie rod and drag link work changes axle position and toe. Align the truck after the repair.
