2017-2022 Super Duty Remote Reservoir Shocks

All about 2017-2022 Super Duty Remote Reservoir Shocks

A reservoir shock carries extra oil in a separate chamber, either on a hose (remote) or bolted to the body (piggyback). More oil means more heat capacity, so the shock keeps damping the same on long washboard roads, hard trail runs and heavy towing, where a standard shock heats up and fades. These fit the 2017-2022 F-250 and F-350. Brands here are ICON, Carli, Bilstein, King and FOX.

How to choose

• Match your lift. Shocks are built for a lift range. Bilstein 5160 fronts come in 2-2.5 inch and 4-6 inch versions, and some rears are listed for 0-3 inch. Tremor trucks start taller, so check Tremor notes on the listing.
• Remote or piggyback. Remote reservoirs mount away from the shock and need a place to live. Piggyback reservoirs sit on the shock body and take less setup. Both do the same job.
• Adjustment. ICON CDCV shocks have a compression adjuster on the shock. ICON CDEV shocks adjust from the cab with the ICON Intelligent Control module, sold separately. King offers adjuster versions too.
• Packages or singles. Carli-Spec packages cover front and rear together. ICON and King kits come front or rear, so buy both ends to keep the truck balanced.
• Size. 2.0 inch bodies suit lighter use. 2.5 and 3.0 inch bodies hold more oil and suit heavy trucks driven hard.

FAQ

Do I need a lift to run these shocks?

Not always. Some rears are listed for 0-1 or 0-3 inch of lift. Front shocks are usually built for a lift range, so match yours.

Remote reservoir or piggyback?

Both add oil and cooling. Piggyback is simpler to mount. Remote gives more room to place the reservoir.

Can these shocks be rebuilt?

ICON says its shocks are fully rebuildable and re-tunable. Check the notes on other brands.

Should I replace front and rear together?

Yes, if you can. Matched shocks at both ends keep the ride balanced.
